Books to Read

I love to read. Hence, the reason I've become a librarian. I have lots of friends who like to read as well, so I was playing around with an idea for a little gift for book lovers. Here's what I came up with.

I took a little spiral bound notebook (I think someone gave me this one, but they are probably less than a dollar a piece at the store.) I covered the front with some pretty designer papers. Then, I wrapped a ribbon around it and added this adorable digi image from SNS called Milton Reading. What's not to love...a mouse, a flower, a book...perfection! I colored it with my copics, added the sentiment, and some colorful ribbons tied to the spiraled wire. Now, it's ready for me or a friend to fill with those books on my wish list. Yes, I probably will need all those pages for my wish list, though I'll never have the time to get to all of them! This would also be a cute way to tuck in a little gift card for Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.

Sweet Bookmark - Milton Reading

It's me.....Erika Martin. I'm back for another Saturday post as part of my Guest Designer stint here at Sweet n' Sassy!

When I saw the Milton Reading digi image, I couldn't help myself. I had to have it. I've always been a voracious reader and my daughter has quickly followed in my footsteps. She's 10 years old and loves chapter books. She's starting to read some of the favorites I had at her age. She's never seen without a book....she's just like her mama. I don't know how she carries her backpack, as it's loaded with books. It's uncomfortable for even me to pick up because it's so heavy!

I thought it would be a special treat for her to wake up to a cute bookmark for the book she's reading. That's one thing she didn't pick up from me.....bookmarks. I don't know if she's even thought about using one. I've always used them and even had a huge collection when I was her age.

I printed the Milton Reading image onto water color paper and it printed beautifully! I used my ink pads as palettes by pressing the lid of the pad against the pad itself. A little bit of water on the color on the lid and a detail paint brush and I was ready to go. In spite of all the shading, I only used 4 ink pads for this image. I just made sure to water down some ink more than the other so that I could get some shading that perfectly matched the base colors.

I rounded the corners with a punch on both the water color paper and also on the pink cardstock that I mounted it on. I punched a hole at the top of the bookmark with a 1/4 inch hole punch and threaded some pink gingham ribbon to create a tassel.

Now I just need to make one for myself. Milton is just too darn cute and it would even cuter for mom and daughter to have matching bookmarks!

For National Library Week!

My daughter informed me on Monday afternoon that this is National Library Week. SO... in honor of the Library, I made this card with Milton Reading under a flower. OK, so actually I made it because he was cute and I wanted to color him, but the other sounded better! LOL!! :-) As I mentioned last week, I really like to have cards that are easy to mail. I give a lot of them away to my Mom and it would be hard for her to have to figure extra postage. So today I thought I'd give you some ideas of ways to add some "punch" to your cards, without much weight or thickness...

1. Use lighter-weight cardstock or patterned paper if you're going to do lots of layering.

2. Add interest by embossing (heat embossing or dry!), sponging, stitching, and/or a clear Spica pen, rather than embellishing.

3. If you do embellish, think "flat & light". Some suggestions are lightweight ribbon tied in a knot, rather than bulky ribbon tied in a bow; mini or micro brads rather than buttons or flowers; and low profile half-pearls rather than dewdrops.
